The
Farm House & Sheep Barn.
The house is a 200
year old individual stone and beamed building in a very tranquil setting
at the end of a single track road. The last house in a hamlet of five
houses, just below the summit of a 1000ft hill with twenty-mile views
from the south-west facing pool and terrace down wooded valleys. Early
risers see the beautiful mists down in the river valley (the house is
called hors des brumes—out of the mists—because we are usually
in the sunshine above). The house is on three storeys and many of the
original features have been retained during restoration, so nothing is
even or regular. Also, furniture and furnishings have been chosen to fit
in with the character while adding modern day comfort.
The sheep barn is a wing of the property and also echoes the old world
character. The accommodation is arranged in reverse order with living
space upstairs and bedrooms at ground level. This takes advantage of the
fantastic views and means the bedrooms are very cool during hot weather.
In the house there is a very comfortable lounge for relaxing. There is
Sky TV to keep up to date with the news and we have Broadband internet
access if required.
Accommodation.
The accommodation is situated in the barn and in the house. All the bedrooms
have en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a hairdryer plus tea/coffee making
facilities and all towels including pool towels are provided. There are
irons and ironing boards available. In fact we pride our selves on catering
for every small detail. All you need to pack are your clothes, personal
accessories and sewing equipment.
Meals.
All meals and drinks are included in the price. Breakfast and lunch will
be buffet style but each evening there will be a three or four course
meal with aperitifs and wine taken in the dining room or if weather permits
under the stars on the West facing terrace. There will also be tea/coffee
breaks during the day.
Bridget, a qualified Home Economist, Restaurant owner and teacher, is
the cook and will wherever possible use fresh and local produce. The menus
will have some French influence but her style is more international. She
will cater for different dietary requirements wherever possible but will
need advance notice.
On the first evening there will be a ‘Welcome dinner’ with
the opportunity to meet your tutor and discuss any thoughts you may have.
The
Pool and Gardens.
The house is set in 16 acres of garden, meadows and woodland. There are
several different garden areas with a wide choice of shady or sunny spots.
In front of the house is a semi-enclosed courtyard garden. Also to the
front is the frog and water-lily pond. Stairs from the kitchen terrace
lead to a pergola and a gravel garden (with grape vines, roses, and honeysuckle)
then to the fenced pool garden with bananas, bamboo, a mulberry tree and
a rockery.
The pool is set in a natural suntrap with breathtaking views. Roman steps
allow for ease of access. A solar shower provides hot or cold showers
at the poolside. There are sun beds, parasols, benches and a summer house.
The pool is 10m x 4.5m and 1.8m at its deepest point, but only 1m deep
around the edges. The pool is heated from May to the end of September.
Adjacent to the pool is a giant chess set for those who enjoy a real mental
challenge. The giant pieces add a very interesting dimension to the game. |
