The Background

We moved to France in 2000 with the plan to renovate Hors des brumes as two properties. We would live in the house and let the barn as a gite. As so often happens the best laid plans never work out. For our first year of lettings the barn was not ready so we let the house and moved into the barn which was very rustic and so the pattern has continued for a mixture of reasons. Firstly, we have had so much repeat business that people have wanted to return to the house. One family have visited us six times and twice in one year; also it has taken us a long time to completely finish the renovations in the barn. After nine years we were ready to let the barn for the full season.

The barn is a magical space, quite unusual and we have tried to keep many of the original features. If you choose to holiday with us I’m certain you will have as good a holiday as the numerous guests we have welcomed over the last ten years.

The barn has even inspired poetry:

Hors des brumes
Hors des brumes is a location supreme.
So tranquil and charastmatic – the food is fantastic.
Peter and Bridget our wonderful hosts
We take this wee chance to offer a toast.
To all your hard work and kindness you’ve shown
No wonder your visitor’s book, it has grown.
We hope you continue to live the good life
Dear Peter Dixon and your wonderful wife.
To live on this hillside, so peaceful and free
I now know the meaning of:

‘A fantastic two weeks away from it all. The barn was all that we could have wished for and more. Many a happy hour spent by the pool.’ Paul & Victoria.

A vast expanse of stars – two electrical storms – one with copious amounts of rain, leading to a marvellous wave of brume (mist) moving up the valley. ‘Most of our time was spent by the pool and playing in the garden. We had a truly refreshing holiday. The barn is just about perfect and extremely well equipped. Bridget’s cooking went down well; our plan to have what the children didn’t want was foiled as they came back for multiple helpings. We have all enjoyed a marvellous week in the most beautiful surrounding imaginable, under a warm sun with an equally warm welcome.
